Why Was Jennifer Lopez’s Unstoppable Premiere Canceled?

The premiere for Jennifer Lopez’s new movie, Unstoppable, was canceled at the last minute.

“In light of today’s safety concerns around heightened wind activity and fire outbreaks in Los Angeles,” a rep for Amazon said in a statement to Us Weekly on Tuesday, January 7. “We regret to inform you that we are cancelling tonight’s premiere of Unstoppable.”

Los Angeles is currently experiencing severe winds and fires in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which is just outside of Santa Monica. Most of the Palisades were ordered to evacuate Tuesday afternoon, per the Los Angeles Times.

“As much as we were looking forward to celebrating this wonderful and inspiring film with you, safety is our first priority,” the statement continued. “We encourage everyone to watch Unstoppable on Prime Video, which will be available globally on January 16. Thank you for your understanding and please stay safe.”

The National Weather Service Los Angeles’ official X account issued an alert regarding dangerous windstorms expected to take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, January 8.

“A LIFE-THREATENING, DESTRUCTIVE, Widespread Windstorm is expected Tue afternoon-Weds morning across much of Ventura/LA Co. Areas not typically windy will be impacted,” the tweet read on Monday, January 6, alongside an infographic of potential areas that could be affected. “See graphic for areas of greatest concern. Stay indoors, away from windows, expect power outages.”

The Unstoppable premiere was scheduled to take place on Tuesday in West Hollywood. Lopez, who stars in the Anthony Robles biopic as the wrestler’s mother, Judy, was expected to attend the red carpet alongside the film’s lead actor Jharrel Jerome. Additional cast members Don Cheadle, Michael Peña, Mykelti Williamson and director William Goldenberg were also expected to attend.

Lopez has yet to address the cancellation of the premiere. News of the premiere cancellation comes one day after Lopez settled her divorce from Ben Affleck. Affleck, 57, produced the sports drama through his and pal Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity.

Unstoppable wasn’t the only upcoming film taking precaution.Wolf Man, which stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, also canceled its Tuesday L.A. premiere.

“Unfortunately, tonight’s premiere of Wolf Man is canceled due to sensitivities around the worsening weather situation in LA and related evacuations,” Universal said in a statement per Variety.

Many stars have been affected by the wildfires, and some have even stepped in to assist in aid. Actor Steve Guttenberg has been on the ground lending helping hand to firefighters by moving cars left behind due to evacuation orders so fire trucks and other residents could easily access the road.

“There are people stuck up there. So we’re trying to clear Palisades Drive and I’m walking up there as far as I can moving cars,” the Police Academy alum said in a Tuesday interview with KTLA. “There are families up there, there are pets up there. There are people who really need help.”
