The Office Spinoff Will Feature an OG Cast Member Reprising Their Role

The Office spinoff will feature a familiar face as an original cast member is confirmed to be reprising their role.

Oscar Nuñez will return as Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar in the upcoming Peacock series, according to Variety. He is the first OG cast member from the hit NBC sitcom who has officially signed on to appear alongside stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei and Ramona Young in the spinoff.

The Office, which aired from 2005 to 2013, focused on the lives of office employees at Dunder Mifflin paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It starred Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Angela Kinsey, B.J. Novak, Brian Baumgartner, Melora Hardin, Kate Flannery and more familiar faces.

Since the show came to an end, there has been a demand for a reboot or revival. Creator Greg Daniels found a way to expand the franchise by developing an original series that will follow the same mockumentary format while being set in the same universe.

According to the logline, the documentary crew “that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” The current rumored title for the Peacock series is The Paper but no official name has been announced yet.

Daniels, 61, previously clarified that while the new installment is “set in the same universe” as the original, it isn’t considered a reboot or a revival.

“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot. Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure,” he told TheWrap in November 2023. “I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

As for the original cast? Nuñez, 66, signed on to make an appearance one month after Baumgartner, 52, weighed in on the project.

“Everything that I’ve heard about it sounds amazing. I have no doubt that fans are going to enjoy it,” he exclusively told Us Weekly in January. “Michael Koman, who is a cocreator with Greg, is a really smart guy and Greg is a genius. He has been so reticent about stepping into that world because he’s not wanting to upset the fans. I do think, however, that at some point in time, the gang will get back together. I don’t think that we’ll do another nine but I think we will get back together.”

Carrell, 62, meanwhile, revealed in June 2024 that he spoke with Gleeson, 41, before the actor accepted the lead role in the Peacock series.

“He’s an excellent actor,” Carell said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something … Did you enjoy it?’ I said of course.”
