Robert Pattinson Reveals New ‘Normie’ Dad Life After Baby
Fatherhood has transformed Robert Pattinson — in more ways than one.
In a cover story with Icon Magazine, set to hit newsstands on Tuesday, October 14, Pattinson, 39, admitted he’s become just a typical suburban dad since welcoming his daughter with fiancée Suki Waterhouse in March 2024.
In a preview shared via Instagram on Friday, October 3, the actor told the magazine that he has “so much more patience” as a parent to a 19-month-old, adding, “It’s funny, it’s not even patience; I genuinely enjoy hanging out with babies. That surprised me.”
He continued, “It’s also funny how you start having real, normie conversations – about things like schools or daycares … it’s so strange. It’s like, there’s this gravitational pull … Like, I have to wear Patagonia puffer jackets and cargo shorts now. I just have to.”
On screen, however, Pattinson said he finds it difficult to play “normal” people, as he’s frequently cast as characters on the edge — including vigilante superhero Batman and Twilight’s romantic vampire Edward Cullen.
“At one point, I really wanted to play some normal guys,” Pattinson told Icon. “And it’s actually kind of difficult to play a normal person when you’re used to playing freaks and stuff.”
In his upcoming film Die My Love, Pattinson plays a new dad opposite his onscreen wife, Jennifer Lawrence. The psychological drama by Lynne Ramsay centers around a mother, Grace (Lawrence), who develops severe postpartum depression and enters psychosis.
“Ever since [my daughter] was born, it’s reinvigorated the way I approach work,” Pattinson said at a press conference for the film during Cannes in May. “Yeah, it’s just, you’re a completely different person the next day.”
Lawrence, 35 — who shares two children born in 2022 and 2025, respectively, with her husband, Cooke Maroney — explained that she and Pattinson were able to take on the roles in Die My Love due to their shared experience as new parents.
“We were in similar places in our lives,” Lawrence said of her and Pattinson’s connection during a Q&A after a screening of the film last month. “He had just had a baby and I had a baby and was pregnant and so we were in this similar place in our lives where all we wanted to talk about was our kids, which is great and easy. I mean, he’s a very easy person to get along with. He’s so sweet. And he’s also immensely talented.”
Pattinson’s partner in life, Waterhouse, 33, couldn’t agree more. She said he’s “the dad I could have hoped for” in a July interview with British Vogue, adding, “I mean a dad and his daughter? It’s an actual love story.”
“He was there with me [in the labor and delivery room] and like all dads, he was really nervous,” she recalled, “but for someone who’s quite an anxious person, he’s been very calm.”
Waterhouse, who’s been with Pattinson since 2018 and got engaged in 2023, also said that she knew he was the one when she was “still really into” the relationship, six years after it began.
“That’s never happened to me before, that’s like a crazy thing,” she told British Vogue. “This love and having a family and having a little world … Whatever happens, this is my dream.”
