Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s Fans Mark 5th ‘Freedom Flight’ Anniversary

March 14, 2025 marks five years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to California — and their fans are celebrating!

Fan pages for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, including @dukeandduchessofsussexdaily, shared a video of the couple documenting their “freedom flight” in 2020.

“It’s 6 a.m. on the 14th of March and we are on the freedom flight,” Harry said in the video, which was first shared in Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries in 2022.

“We are leaving Canada and we are headed to Los Angeles,” Harry said.

The royal panned the camera around to show Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, Meghan, their son, Prince Archie, and their dogs.

Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, announced their plan to step back from royal duties and to become financially independent on January 8, 2020. The family spent time in Vancouver Island, Canada, before their arrival at Tyler Perry’s home in Los Angeles as the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread around the world.

In the video documenting the flight, Harry described Perry as an “amazing friend who we haven’t met.”

“No one knew we were there,” Harry reflected in the docuseries. “We were there for six weeks and no one knew. My family still thought I was in Canada.”

Harry and Meghan went on to purchase their own home in Montecito and maintained a close relationship with Perry. The couple revealed in their Netflix docuseries that Perry was named godparent to their second child, Princess Lilibet, born in 2021.

The couple went on to expand their careers in the years following, with the creation of their Archewell Foundation and production company.

Meghan’s latest Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, was recently renewed for a second season, and on Thursday, March 13, the duchess announced plans to launch a new podcast in April, titled “Confessions of a Female Founder.”

As for Harry, the royal has kept busy with The Invictus Games, the sporting tournament he created for injured or sick service personnel in 2014.

Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly at the 2025 games in Vancouver, Canada, the prince said: “Today, I have the benefit of hindsight and experience, but I wouldn’t change any of it — except still wishing there were no need for the Invictus Games.”
