Post Malone Performs Song Dedicated to Daughter at 2024 CMA Awards
Post Malone paid a heartfelt tribute to his 2-year-old daughter with his performance of “Yours” during the 2024 Country Music Association Awards.
The artist, 29, took the stage for a solo performance of the track — which was inspired by his daughter’s future wedding — during the Wednesday, November 20, awards show. “She might be wearing white / but her first dress, it was pink,” he sang in the chorus, referring to the day his baby girl will eventually get married. “We’ll both love her forever / but I loved her long before.”
Malone gave fans chills while singing the track acoustic with violins and guitars in the background. He donned a purple suit with embroidery and a cowboy hat to hit in with the crowd. (Earlier in the show, Malone performed “California Sober” with Chris Stapleton.)
“One day I know I’ll give her away / buddy that don’t mean she’s yours,” he sang, warning his daughter’s future husband that he’s the No. 1 guy.
Malone finished the song with a shout-out to his daughter, saying, “We love you DeeDee, we love you so much.” Pal Jelly Roll threw up a heart hand from the audience in support of the touching performance.
While Malone is new to the country music world following the August release of his F-1 Trillion album, he is having a big night at the CMA Awards. In addition to his solo performance, he teamed up with Stapleton for a live rendition of their duet, “California Sober.” Malone’s collaboration with Morgan Wallen, “I Had Some Help,” is also nominated in four categories: Single of the Year, Song of the Year, Musical Event of the Year and Music Video of the Year.
Malone welcomed his daughter with his fiancée in May 2022. Although he has chosen to keep both of their identities private, he told People in July that the song “Yours” — the closing track of his country album — was “very special” to him.
The lyrics of the track found Malone addressing his daughter’s potential future partner as he predicted the heartbreak he will feel “when I walk her down that aisle and do what daddies have to do.”
Malone shared little glimpses into his life as a father, noting that he’d remember his daughter’s “first dress, it was pink” and looking back on memories of her first steps and first word.
“She might be your better half / Yeah but she’s my everything,” he sang.
Malone emphasized the special connection he would still share with his daughter no matter what happened in her future, noting, “And we’ll both love her forever / But I loved her long before / And one day I know I’ll give her away / Buddy, that don’t mean she’s yours.”
At the time, Malone shared a music video of his first live performance of “Yours” from his “A Night in Nashville” concert in July. At the beginning of the clip, he joked that “we’ve got a long time to go” before his daughter’s wedding, adding that the song was still “fresh” to him so he hoped he didn’t “f— it up” on stage.
Months earlier, Malone explained why he has opted to keep his daughter out of the spotlight.
“I feel like a lot of people feel entitled to know every single detail of everyone’s life and it’s why I don’t want to post any pictures of my baby,” he told CR Fashion Book in September 2023. “I want her to be able to make that decision whenever she wants to and is ready.”
