Official Yellowstone Bar Book Recipe for Long Black Train Drink

It’s hard to live like a Dutton when you don’t have a massive cattle ranch at hand, but a new book is about to make it a little easier to channel your inner Beth.

The Official Yellowstone Bar Book, which hits shelves Tuesday, November 26, includes 75 cocktail recipes inspired by the Paramount Network drama as well as its spinoffs 1883 and 1923. Authored by Lex Taylor and Nathan Gurr, the book also features short histories of some of the Dutton clan’s favorite adult beverages, including Coors Banquet beer and Buffalo Trace bourbon.

While there are plenty of classic cocktails in the mix — old fashioneds, Manhattans and Beth’s beloved martini, to name a few — there are also tons of more complex creations on offer. One, as seen below, takes its name from the train station, that mythical destination so often used by John Dutton and his associates.

The latest occupant of the train station could be John himself, following Kevin Costner’s exit from Yellowstone last year. Fans won’t learn his fate till season 5B premieres Sunday, November 10, but a strong Yellowstone-themed cocktail might take the edge off.

Long Black Train

It usually doesn’t end well for enemies of the ranch. Sometimes, the only thing left for them is a trip to the “train station.” There is no literal train, nor station; after a shooting, hanging, choking or rattlesnake to the face, getting taken to the train station involves a steep canyon drop. And as Lloyd says, “At the bottom of that canyon is how the West was won.” This black drink with a red cherry is a nod to the long black train, and to all who have ridden it.

Serves 1

1/4 teaspoon activated charcoal
1/2 ounce Guinness syrup
3 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes orange bitters
2 ounces rye whiskey
Luxardo cherry juice
Cherry wood chips for smoking
1 Luxardo cherry

Instructions

1. In a mixing glass, combine charcoal, Guinness syrup, bitters and whiskey. Add ice and stir for 15 seconds. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.

2. Smear a layer of cherry juice just below and inside the rim of the rocks glass to give it a dripping blood effect.

3. Using a cocktail smoker placed directly on top of the glass, add cherry wood smoke, then garnish with cherry.
