Nick Carter to Sue Sexual Assault Accuser’s Mom Over Secret Twitter
Nick Carter asked a judge for permission to add the mother of his sexual assault accuser Melissa Schuman as a defendant to his lawsuit alleging an attempted shakedown against him, Us Weekly can exclusively report.
On Thursday, November 13, Carter’s legal team revealed the plan to add Schuman’s mom, Leisha Stinson, to the suit seeking damages for defamation and extortion.
The pop star’s team recently deposed Schuman’s dad, Jerome Schuman, who is already a defendant in the suit. During his deposition, Jerome testified that Stinson, his ex-wife and Melissa’s mom, ran an anonymous Twitter account that Carter believes was used as part of the extortion plot.
The Backstreet Boys star said the Twitter account was used to disseminate “false, fabricated, defamatory and menacing statements” about him. Carter claimed Melissa’s mom or the entire family “actively concealed the true identity of the owner of the Twitter account.”
“Then they used the foregoing sham account to defame Carter and pursue their extortive goals,” the motion read. Carter demanded that he be allowed to add Stinson as a defendant so that she could be “held accountable for the harm and damages that her illicit conduct has caused.”
The judge has yet to rule.
As Us previously reported, Carter’s legal drama started in 2022 when Shannon Ruth sued the singer over an alleged 2002 assault. Carter denied the claims.
Carter filed a countersuit against Melissa, Jerome and Ruth in February 2023. He accused the trio of conspiring together to create false accusations of assault in an effort to extract a financial settlement from him. The trio denied all accusations of wrongdoing.
Melissa filed her own lawsuit against Carter over an alleged 2003 assault. The pop star then countersued her, claiming her false accusations cost him endorsement deals.
In his countersuit, Carter demanded Melissa pay him over $2 million in damages for the harm to his reputation.
In his filing, Carter admitted he had a consensual encounter with Schuman back in 2003. “After having consensual sex, [Melissa] and [Carter] fell asleep. [Melissa] slept next to [Carter] through the night,” the Backstreet Boys star’s lawyer said.
“At no point in time did [Carter] sexually assault [Schuman] or any other person,” the pop star’s team said in court documents.
Carter said Melissa’s participation in a 2024 documentary, along with numerous other interviews in which she made “false” claims of abuse, caused great harm to his career.
“In addition to publishing the defamatory statements to the world on social media and through other mediums, [Melissa] also copied or ‘tagged’ many of her own and others’ defamatory statements directly to third parties that are either involved with or have influence over [Nick‘s] prospective business opportunities, advantages and contracts,” his lawyer said.
As Us first reported, as part of the legal battle, Carter is set to be deposed in the case in the next couple of months. The pop star will have to testify while on break from the Backstreet Boys’ successful residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas, which recently was extended with new dates through next year.
