Mother-Daughter Duo Produce Heartwarming Romantic Comedy ‘Curry Scent’

A coming-of-age romantic comedy from mother-daughter duo Nisha and Indigo Sabharwal offers a fresh take on an immigrant family’s search for the American Dream.

Curry Scent follows 19-year-old Geetha (Indigo Sabharwal) and her eight-member family as they navigate life in the U.S., searching for a romantic match to legitimize her visa. Despite cramped quarters and menial jobs, the family faces challneges together with humor and determination.

“I wrote ‘Curry Scent’ with my daughter Indigo in mind as I saw in her the young girl I was when I came to this country, and I also knew her capabilities and her natural delivery of lines in our casual conversations that made me sure she was the right person to deliver my story,” said filmmaker Nisha Sabharwal.

Indigo, who stars and produced the film, shares, “I have been trained by my overachieving mother, who shows me daily the importance of hard work and dedication. Much that I love acting and bringing the roles that I play to life, I am very involved and passionate about the process of filmmaking from start to finish as well. It can get demanding at times, but as I find both sides very rewarding, I somehow find the ability to do it with a skip in my step.”

As she searches for a suitable match, Geetha learns what she loves about her country, and at what price she is willing to forsake it. “There are certain unique elements to joint family living that are humorous and heartwarming, especially when looking at it through Western eyes. Leaving your country and immigrating to a different world is hard for anyone, but when you have this strong family connection of love and support, every challenge feels easier and manageable,” Nisha said.

She adds, “And of course, in my Indian upbringing, I feel that Karma always has a role, and so often, unexpected good things happen to good people.”

“Curry Scent,” distributed by Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, is now available to rent or own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, and on DVD.
