Mitt Romney’s Sister-in-Law Carrie Elizabeth Cause of Death Revealed

The cause of death for Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, has been revealed.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office announced via a press release on Tuesday, December 8, that Carrie Elizabeth died due to “blunt traumatic injuries.”

According to the medical examiner, Carrie Elizabeth was injured “after falling from the rooftop of a parking structure” outside of Los Angeles. Her death was ruled a suicide. She was 64 years old.

News of Carrie Elizabeth’s death broke in October.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” a representative for the former United States senator told People in a statement at the time. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

A representative for the Los Angeles County Sheriff confirmed to People at the time that law enforcement responded to a call in the evening after a woman fell from a parking structure in Valencia, California. Us previously reported that the medical examiner’s office listed Carrie Elizabeth’s place of death as “street” on its website.

Carrie Elizabeth was married to Mitt’s older brother, George “Scott” Romney. People reported that Scott filed for divorce from Carrie Elizabeth in June.

“This is an immensely difficult time for Ms. Romney’s loved ones, and the family has requested privacy as they grieve,” Carrie Elizabeth’s lawyer Paulina Markey said in a statement to the outlet in October. “We extend our deepest condolences to them during this time.”

Markey confirmed that Carrie Elizabeth and Scott’s divorce was not finalized before her death.

Mitt previously served as Massachusetts governor from 2003 to 2007, and ran for president on the Republican ticket in 2008. He ultimately dropped out of the race and backed John McCain, who lost to President Barack Obama.

Four years later, Mitt launched another bid for the presidency. He became the Republican nominee in 2012. He ultimately lost again to Obama who went on to serve a second term. Mitt joined the United States Senate in 2019, as he was elected to represent Utah. He announced in 2023 that he planned to retire from public service at the end of his term which ended earlier this year.

“I spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another,” Romney said in a video posted on social media at the time. “At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-80s. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. While I’m not running for reelection, I’m not retiring from the fight. I’ll be your United States senator until January of 2025.”

In his final speech to Congress, Mitt gave a farewell address to his colleagues and constituents.

“I have learned that politics alone cannot measure up to the challenges we face,” Mitt said in December 2024. “A country’s character is a reflection not just of its elected officials, but also of its people. I leave Washington to return to be one among them.”
