How JoAnna Garcia Swisher Is Keeping Her Outlander Obsession Alive

JoAnna Garcia Swisher can totally relate to all of Us obsessing over the new season of her Netflix series, Sweet Magnolias.
“I feel like I can work Outlander into almost any conversation that I ever have had,” Swisher, 45, exclusively shares in the latest issue of Us Weekly. “But I have not finished it because I’m, like, pacing myself. I have a few episodes left of the series.”
Swisher is such a fan of the sci-fi romance — which aired its seventh season last month — that she’s constructed a way to ensure the show lasts for her even after the eighth and final season wraps up sometime this year.
“What I’ve done is I’ve started to go back to season 1 and I’m rewatching season 1 and I’m gonna hold on to the last few episodes of their last season up until the premiere of the prequel,” she explained. “So I don’t feel the sadness of loss.”
Outlander, which premiered on Starz in 2014, follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a World War II nurse who travels back in time to 18th century Scotland and meets her true love, Jamie (Sam Heughan). Their epic love story is anything but boring, spanning across multiple decades, continents and wars.
An exact premiere date for the final season has yet to be announced, but the show’s prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, debuts this year and will follow the romances between Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy).
While it looks like Swisher will have plenty of Outlander content to queue up, the rest of Us are reeling over season 4 of Sweet Magnolias, which premiered on February 6 and quickly shot up to No. 1 on Netflix’s Top TV Shows in the U.S. While a fifth season has yet to be confirmed (fingers crossed!), Swisher is just grateful fans are having as much fun watching the show as she does making it.
“I think [this is] my favorite season, so it’s been so nice to hear people that have seen it react that way,” she tells Us. “Inevitably there’s so many nerves that happen when you’re so proud of something and then you get down to the wire and you’re like, ‘Wait, I hope people like it!’ So it makes me feel really good.”

‘Back in Action’
“My girlfriend Cameron Diaz just came out with a new movie, Back in Action with Jamie Foxx, and I just am in awe of her just generally, but the fact that she just can kick ass and be so cool and gorgeous and do it on her own terms, it’s so amazing and it’s just a fun watch,” Swisher tells Us, noting that Diaz, 52, is “meant” to be a movie star.
“I know that she’s got a lot of other things [going on],” she clarifies. “But I’m like, ‘The people have spoken!’”
‘The Three Lives of Cate Kay’
Swisher says her lifestyle digital and social media platform, The Happy Place, is currently featuring Kate Fagan’s latest novel, which is “so good.” (The story follows a woman who creates a fictional persona named Cate Kay to hide her true identity after an incident in her hometown.)
“You could crack open this person’s brain and look inside and I love that. Experiencing some traumatic things and how she reacted to it and how she channeled it, it’s sort of like, ‘OK, this happened and I took a hard right turn and then this happened and I took a hard left turn,’” Swisher says. “But then there’s this mystery surrounding who she is and there’s books and movie stars. … It’s just, like, really cool. And there’s really great romance in it too.”
Kelsea Ballerini
JoAnna and her two daughters — Emerson Jay, 11, and Sailor Stevie, 8, whom she shares with husband Nick Swisher — currently can’t get enough of the country star’s tunes.
“My kids and me are just out of control,” she tells Us, sharing her plans to attend Ballerini’s Patterns tour. “She’s coming to Tampa, we’re going to the show. We’re doing a massive girls night. I’m taking my girlfriends and my and their daughters and we are going to live it up. I love her so much. She is what I’m blasting right now.”
A Holy Trinity of TV
In addition to her Outlander obsession, Swisher has a couple other TV shows on the docket. “I love Lioness,” she tells Us. “That’s such a great show and I just finished the second season. … I’m about to start Landman, also.”
