Emily Blunt Says There’s ‘Rumblings’ About a Devil Wears Prada Sequel
Emily Blunt is remaining tight-lipped about the potential of a Devil Wears Prada sequel, but she’s on-board with the idea.
“There [are] rumblings,” Blunt, 41, said on Thursday, December 5, at the Red Sea International Film Festival, per The Hollywood Reporter. “There is stuff churning around.”
The Oppenheimer star noted that she wasn’t sure whether she could “confirm” anything regarding a second movie. “But we would all be delighted,” she teased.
Blunt starred in the beloved 2006 film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s book of the same name, as Emily, who works alongside Andy (Anne Hathaway) and Nigel (Stanley Tucci) at a fashion magazine. Throughout the film, the Runway employees try to navigate boss Miranda Priestly’s (Meryl Streep) long list of demands.
In July, multiple outlets reported that screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna was working on a follow-up to the OG film. According to Entertainment Weekly, producer Wendy Finerman and director David Frankel are also on board. Blunt, Hathaway and Streep are all reportedly in talks to reprise their roles with Tucci also set to return. Us Weekly reached out to Disney at the time but didn’t immediately hear back.
Per Puck News, the sequel follows Miranda running Runway while navigating the current-day media with the traditional publishing landscape changing for the internet. Emily is an executive at a luxury brand conglomerate that advertises with the magazine.
As conversation about a sequel began to ramp up in recent years, Blunt gushed during an appearance on The View in November 2022 that she would do a follow-up film “in a heartbeat.” However, two years later, she changed course.
While claiming that there had “never” been much movement when it came to creating a second movie, Blunt said in February that the cast is “good” with the one film.
“Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s OK,” Blunt explained during an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast at the time. “And I think — didn’t Meryl say something funny about it? They asked her about it, ‘Would she ever do a sequel?’ and she went, ‘Yeah, if I don’t have to lose the weight.’ But I think she said ‘the f—ing weight.’”
Blunt was referencing Streep’s interview with Access Hollywood in 2012, where the Only Murders in the Building star was asked whether she would be interested in a second film and replied, “Sure, I mean, I’d have to lose the f—ing weight, but I would do that, yeah.”
