Chris Hemsworth Documents Dad’s Early Alzheimer’s in Road Trip Film
Chris Hemsworth gave a glimpse at his life with his dad, Craig Hemsworth, who is battling Alzheimer’s, in a new National Geographic documentary.
Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, which dropped on Disney+ and Hulu on November 24, 2025, followed Chris as he ventured with his dad on a road trip across Australia. In the first few moments of the film, the Thor actor revealed that Craig has “early-stage Alzheimer’s” and the symptoms started in the “last two years.”
“It’s so easy to take our parents for granted. I feel I’ve been so busy I haven’t spent as much time with my dad as I would want to … and there was the diagnosis,” Chris said. “He has early-stage Alzheimer’s and there’s definitely good days and bad days.”
It is unclear when Craig was diagnosed, but Chris previously shared that he has an elevated risk of Alzheimer’s because he has two copies of the APOE4 gene.
In the doc, Chris explained that he and Craig were going to take a trip around parts of Australia that have a special connection to their family. Not only would there be quality time for the father-son duo, but the getaway would serve as reminiscence therapy for Craig.
“I wanna do everything I can to help him so my dad and I are going on a road trip. It’s something we’ve been talking about for years,” Chris recalled. “Turns out the experience could help fight the disease. If it helps, fantastic. But I’m just looking forward to spending time with my dad.”

Chris Hemsworth Opens Up About Struggling With His Dad’s Diagnosis
Chris shared that it has been a challenge to adjust to his father’s condition.
“It’s confronting and [a] really tough thing to navigate because it’s something about his personality that is … It’s not a stubbornness but there’s a route of how he does things,” Chris said. “I’m not sure if he’s forgetting this or is he insisting on doing it this way. Or is this a symptom? I don’t know.”
Why Chris Hemsworth Wanted to Take a Road Trip With His Dad
In the doc, Chris and his family were speaking to clinicians, specialists and neurologists to help Craig. They found clinical psychologist Dr. Suraj Samtani, who conducts studies for treating dementia patients. Chris met with Dr. Samtani at a soccer game to discuss a new study that showed Alzheimer’s patients improved their condition when in social environments. Chris asked the doctor about his thoughts on taking his dad on a road trip to former points of interest that had meaning to Craig. Samtani shared that revisiting past memories would be beneficial for his dad’s brain, as it would be part of reminiscence therapy.
“So my road trip with my dad is also going to be a trip back into our past to exercise his memory in order to strengthen it,” Chris said in a voice-over as he and his dad geared up to explore Australia via motorbike.
Chris and Craig’s adventure included stops at the home where Chris and his family used to live in Melbourne and their old childhood home in the remote area of Australia’s Northern Territory.
Chris Hemsworth Recreated His Family’s Former Home
During the first stop in Melbourne, Chris was not only able to visit his former home, but the new owners also allowed him to recreate the house as it once looked when the Hemsworths lived there.
“Revisiting the house was certainly strange,” Craig said in a confessional about the experience. “The detail was extraordinary … It’s very satisfying recognizing stuff I hadn’t thought about for a long while.”
The restoration not only included several pieces of the family’s old furniture but also photos from the time period. Chris’ teen bedroom was recreated and included old photographs of family, friends and even ex-girlfriends, which Chris reacted to by joking, “Don’t show my wife!”
Since Chris knew the restoration would be a “powerful experience,” he arranged it so that his mom, Leonie Hemsworth, would be able to join them at one point. While waiting for Leonie’s arrival, Craig asked his son multiple times where Leonie was, which sparked concern from Chris. When Leonie arrived, she shared it was “overwhelming” to be there because of the “flood of memories.”
Leonie Hemsworth Gets Emotional About Her Husband’s Condition
In a confessional, Leonie reflected on how she’s been handling Craig’s condition as his wife.
“As a partner, it’s difficult because I want him to be the person that he was. I want the relationship,” Leonie said while fighting back tears. “I want that relationship. Sometimes I wake up in the middle [of the] night and it’s quite terrifying where it’s all going.”
Chris Hemsworth’s ‘1st Movie’ Was a ‘Crocodile Hunter’ At-Home Recreation
At their old home, Chris found a tape of the first movie he and his brothers created, which was titled “Croc Hunter.” The actor played the VHS showing a younger version of himself portraying a character reminiscent of the late Steve Irwin.
“Crikey! How you going, folks? We got a real bloody ripper in store for you today,” Chris said in the throwback footage that Craig called “gold.”
The home movie earned a series of laughs from Craig and Leonie. Chris joked that he did this movie “and then Thor.”
Steve’s son, Robert Irwin, shared the clip on social media, sharing that his dad “would’ve been stoked” to see it.
Chris Hemsworth Took His Dad Back to His Cattle Herding Days
After spending time in Melbourne, Chris and Craig flew up to the Northern Territory to continue their adventure. They resumed their motorbike journey to drive to Bulman, which is a community for the indigenous Aboriginals.
Before moving to Melbourne, Chris and his family lived in a remote area where his father was a cattle herder and bull wrangler. Chris reunited Craig with his friend Spencer Martin, whom he knew from his herding days.
“It’s amazing watching them together and seeing the connection they have and the friendship they shared,” Chris said of Craig and Martin’s reunion. “And how immediate and present it is the moment they start talking. You can see it in my dad’s eyes and Spencer’s eyes how much they appreciate their time spent together.”
Chris later shared that he noticed that Craig started to get confused about where he was and who he was speaking to, which the Marvel star called “painful” to witness.
In a confessional, Craig called the trip to Bulman a “wonderful” experience.
Chris Hemsworth Checks in With His Dad About His Alzheimer’s
During the last night of their trip, Chris and Craig camped out in the forest. While around the campfire, Chris and his dad had a heartfelt conversation about how Craig is doing amid his health battle. Craig confessed that he’s afraid of being a “burden” and losing contact with his loved ones. Chris reassured his dad that he’s not a burden and that their family will take care of him. They also exchanged “I love yous.”
How Chris Hemsworth Thought the Trip Helped His Dad
Throughout their trip, Chris noticed Craig had his ups and downs with his Alzheimer’s battle, but he believed the experience was helpful.
“I don’t know if this grand piece of reminiscence therapy will have a long-term effect. I noticed in the short term, he became more engaging and outspoken and comfortable,” he said. “So hopefully this continues on, but right now, I’m so thankful for how I saw things awaken in him. I have him right here with me, and hopefully I have many more years, but ultimately I don’t know and I don’t have any control over that. I just find myself wanting to spend more time with him and appreciating every moment.”
