Chad Michael Murray Still Has His Patriotic Riverdale Jumpsuit
Chad Michael Murray‘s Riverdale wardrobe — specifically that patriotic jumpsuit — doesn’t just live on in our minds but in the actor’s closet as well.
While reflecting on his greatest roles with Netflix on Saturday, November 23, Murray, 43, recalled getting to play a cult leader on Riverdale.
“Who speaks like this? This guy as Edgar Evernever in good old Riverdale,” he said after reciting some of Edgar’s dialogue. “I got to say some crazy stuff in that. I get to strap myself to a rocket and shoot myself to a comet.”
Murray’s fondness for the role resulted in him keeping some items to remember Edgar.
“Truth be told, I still have the wardrobe,” he revealed. “It is in my house on a mannequin that I had made just for that costume because it was effing awesome.”
Riverdale, which ran from 2017 to 2023, followed a group of friends who came together to uncover the dark secrets that exist within their town. Based on the iconic Archie Comics, Riverdale took their audience for many unexpected rides over the years — and used any opportunity they could find to bring in surprising guest stars.
Murray, for his part, was introduced in the third season as a cult leader connected to a secret organ harvesting operation. After Edgar was cornered by Alice (Mädchen Amick) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) in season 4, he took things up a notch by donning a custom jumpsuit with plans to disappear via rocket.
“I’ve always been intrigued by the Riverdale universe just because, obviously it’s historic, with all the years of the comics, and now it’s this newfound superfandom,” Murray told Cosmopolitan in 2018. “My wife [Sarah Roemer] is a huge fan. She watched all of season 1 — she binge-watched it in like a week — and when it came down the pipe, I was fascinated by it. It was an opportunity to go play and work with a good group of people.”
Murray, who previously had roles on One Tree Hill and Dawson’s Creek, was excited to get the chance to play a nefarious character on a hit teen drama, adding, “It has an interesting phenomenon right now. People love this show. When I discussed it with my wife and some of her friends, people kept saying, ‘You have to do this show.’ Because they’re all fans. There’s a superfandom with Riverdale.”
He continued: “To be able to come in as Edgar and play something different and a character that has a depth and intrigue to me. Plus, with the cult world I thought, ‘That’s a no brainer.’”
In addition to Murray, Riverdale also featured cameos from Andy Cohen, Kelly Ripa, Shannen Doherty, Anthony Michael Hall and more memorable stars.
Riverdale is currently streaming on Netflix.
