Camila Cabello Responds to If She’s Had a Song Written About Her

Camila Cabello had a playful response to whether she thinks any songs have been written about her.

“I have been lucky to contribute in many ways to the great music of the 21st century,” Cabello, 27, said during her guest appearance on Alex Cooper’s Unwell Tour, per fan footage. “Sometimes I have written them. Sometimes they have been written about me. So, you’re welcome, motherf—-s.”

Cabello’s remark comes amid speculation that several tracks from Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet album are about their alleged love triangle with Shawn Mendes. In Carpenter’s track “Coincidence,” the Disney channel alum sings about a guy who got back together with an ex shortly after their split.

“The second I put my head on your chest / She knew, she’s got a real sixth sense,” Carpenter sings on the first verse. “Now her name comes up once, then it comes up twice / And without her even bein’ here, she’s back in your life / Now she’s in the same damn city on the same damn night.”

Looking back at young love! To the satisfaction of many longtime Shawnmila shippers, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s longtime friendship transitioned into a steamy relationship in 2019, and they shared many sweet moments before splitting. Five years earlier, Mendes and Cabello met while they were both opening up for Austin Mahone on tour. At the […]

Carpenter’s “Taste” also directs the lyrics to an ex’s new girlfriend. “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you,” she sings. “If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”

Carpenter added fuel to the fire after she dropped a video for “Taste,” which starred brunette Jenna Ortega. Cabello has been brunette during most of her career, including while dating Mendes.

Cabello and Mendes began dating in 2019 before calling it quits two years later. The pair rekindled their romance in 2023 but parted ways months later. “Camila was the one who ultimately decided to end things,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly at the time, adding that Mendes was “very upset” that they couldn’t make their relationship last.

Mendes was allegedly briefly linked to Carpenter in early 2023. Mendes denied in March 2023 that he and Carpenter were an item. “We are not dating,” he told the Dutch TV program RTL Boulevard at the time.

Months after dropping Short n’ Sweet, Carpenter performed at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards in September— which Cabello and Mendes attended.

“Pulling up to my own funeral,” Mendes wrote via Instagram of his VMAs outfit before the show. (Mendes appeared to leave the awards show early after performing his tune “Nobody Knows,” which seems to hint at his romance with Cabello.)

Cabello, for her part, shared a similar message on the red carpet. “I’m in my ‘Godspeed’ era, and that song is very much about letting go of everything that does not serve you,” Cabello told Billboard at the time. “So, I kind of am having a funeral today for just everything that is negative, everything that doesn’t serve me. So, I’m kind of attending my own funeral today at the VMAs.”

Days later, Cabello performed at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival and tweaked the lyrics to her and Mendes’ “Señorita.” Fans began speculating that the change was in reference to Carpenter’s “Taste.”

“You say we’re just friends / But friends don’t know the way you…” Cabello sang, before omitting the next word: “taste.” Instead, she put a finger to her lips before moving on.
