Author Anna Todd Teases New Book The Last Sunrise
Anna Todd’s upcoming book, The Last Sunrise, has a very special connection to her role as a mom.
“There’s a very personal part of it,” Todd, 35, exclusively told Us Weekly about her new romance novel. “The main character has the same genetic condition that my son has, which was really therapeutic and really hard at times [to write].”
Anna’s 13-year-old son, Asher, whom she shares with ex-husband Jordan Todd, has a rare genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis along with autism and epilepsy.
The Last Sunrise, which is set to release in May 2025, follows the story of 22-year-old Oriah Pera, who suffers from chronic health issues. When she moves to Majorca with her overprotective mom, she meets Julian, who starts to pull Oriah out of her shell.
“It’s obviously gonna be a love story,” Anna teased to Us. “There’s lots of drama, family stuff going on, travel.”
The author explained that she really leaned into the “wish fulfillment” of it all when it came to writing this story.
“I feel like we all need some pretending we’re in a European country,” she continued. “I’m really excited about it.”
The book isn’t even out yet, but there’s already a movie adaptation on the way. The film rights were optioned before Anna “even wrote the first word,” and she’s kicking off her producing era.
“I’m a producer, full producer, on that film,” she teased. “I can’t say which studio, but we’re in full motion for that, so I’m so excited.”
Anna offered advice to all authors out there that she does “not recommend” optioning a book before writing the story.
“It was a process as a producer. As a producer, it was a great idea. But as an author I was like, ‘Wait a second,’” she joked. “But it’s been really fun.”
The Last Sunrise will be the latest release in Todd’s extensive line of fictional romances. She celebrated the 10th anniversary of the After book series in September (you can read our chat about that here) and dropped the third book in The Brightest Star trilogy, titled The Infinite Light of Dust, this past July.
“For the people who read the third book, they’re like, ‘What’s going on with that ending and what’s coming?’ I’ll say, I feel like I’m never gonna be fully done with any book ever. I don’t know how to end books, clearly,” she quipped of The Brightest Star books. “I just would never say any of my books are ever gonna end. I love that franchise and that was such a journey to publish, and [it] was really cool to publish my own books through my own imprint.”
