Anne Hathaway Rocks Bleached Blonde Hair in Chilling Mother Mary Trailer
Anne Hathaway is living a pop star fantasy in the new trailer for the A24 film Mother Mary — kind of.
The teaser, released on Tuesday, December 2, depicts a bleached blonde Hathaway, 43, portraying Mother Mary, a singer who reconnects with costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) ahead of her new tour. Mary makes it clear that she’s looking for more than just a new dress from Sam.
Hathaway sports a number of bold looks while on stage, including elaborate headpieces and bejeweled bodysuits with flowy capes and trains. She shows off her dancing skills, performing a vulnerable routine inside of a barn and also commands the stage in front of a huge crowd with undeniable star power. But as the trailer points out, “This is not a ghost story” or a “love story.”
Instead, things take a bit of a dark turn when Mary reveals that she and Sam have an unexplainable connection. “You think there’s something inside of you?” Sam asks Mary after drawing a circle on the floor with chalk and lighting a bunch of candles. They sit in the circle and attempt to “cast out” the mysterious being inside of Mary.
In addition to Hathaway and Coel, 38, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford and FKA Twigs also star in the drama. David Lowery serves as writer, director and producer.
Other scenes in the trailer feature the characters using a Ouija board, and things appear to get rather steamy between Hathaway and FKA Twigs’ characters. Needless to say, fans are already looking forward to seeing Hathaway’s upcoming project on the big screen with the all-star cast.
“I can already tell that this is gonna be one hell of a trippy ride,” one person wrote in the trailer’s comments section on YouTube, while a second person said, “Just when I thought I was over my Anne Hathaway obsession… she does THIS, The Odyssey, Devil Wears Prada 2, THIS. Can’t wait for 2026. Take my money A24!!!!”
Others couldn’t get enough of Hathaway’s hair transformation for the role.
“Anne Hathaway looks Goooooood with Blonde Hair!” one fan wrote, as another simply wrote, “STUNNING.”
Prior to the trailer’s release, Coel praised Hathaway for her dedication to the role.
“David’s writing is so vivid — we were forced into an intensity,” Coel told Vogue in July. “It’s very brave work that she’s done. Look at that dance in the barn — it’s scary.”
Coel continued of the barn dance scene, “The physicality she had to learn in preparation for this job — and it’s not just us in the barn, it’s the crew, it’s the producers and so of course this day was terrifying, a little monster on her shoulder, but no one realized until after the first take. And then to keep doing it — take after take. That requires a lot of strength. Gallons and tons.”
Hathaway described the process of adopting the pop star persona.
“I had to submit to being a beginner,” she told the outlet. “The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be OK. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”
Mother Mary is due out in theaters in spring 2026.
