A Casual Fan’s Guide to Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix in Austin

One of the most highly anticipated weekends on the Formula 1 calendar is finally here.

F1 brings the United States Grand Prix to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, October 20, for a crucial showdown with just six races remaining on the schedule.

The race in Austin is the start of two triple-headers to wrap up the 2024 season, with the Mexican and Brazilian Grands Prix on the horizon before a two-week break. After that, the Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix close things out.

Heading into the weekend, Red Bull leads the constructors’ standings, while Max Verstappen’s lead in the driver’s championship has been reduced to just 52 points over Lando Norris

Of note, the United States Grand Prix is the first race where Daniel Ricciardo has been replaced at VCARB by Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson. Ricciardo’s contract expired at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix last month, which brought about his departure after a celebrated career.

“I’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild and wonderful and been a journey,” Ricciardo, 35, posted via Instagram September 26. “To the teams and individuals that have played their part, thank you. To the fans who love the sport sometimes more than me haha thank you. It’ll always have its highs and lows but it’s been fun and truth be told I wouldn’t change it. Until the next adventure.”
