The same disturbing scene plays out in one video after another: Tourists at Yellowstone National Park spot a bison, North America’s largest land animal, and stop to take photos. In a fraction of a second, the bison goes from standing to charging.

On July 10, a man who bystanders said was a “respectful distance” from a bison was flipped into the air by the charging animal, in an incident captured on video. Just two weeks earlier, a 12-year-old was injured by a bison in the park, according to the National Park Service.

Bison gored two people in Yellowstone in 2025 and two more in 2024, despite the park service’s ubiquitous safety warnings.
