3 New Netflix Shows I Can’t Wait to Watch This Weekend (November 28-30)
It’s Thanksgiving weekend, but the real holiday for Netflix subscribers is the return of Stranger Things after a three-year hiatus.
That series is just a little bit too big to spotlight in Watch With Us‘ new Netflix shows.
But if you’re finished watching the four episodes of that half-season, these are the three new-to-Netflix shows I can’t wait to watch this weekend.
Two out of the three picks this week are recently arrived exiles from Showtime, while the third is a French comedy that’s an offbeat choice.
‘Homeland’ (2011 – 2020)
Homeland was Showtime’s signature drama for nearly a decade, and it features Claire Danes in one of the signature roles of her career. Danes plays Carrie Mathison, a very talented CIA officer who is battling a bipolar disorder that could destroy her career. Carrie’s reputation in the CIA is hanging by a thread when a prisoner of war, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), is released by al-Qaeda after eight years.
Carrie is so convinced that Brody has been turned by his captors that she’s willing to burn all of her remaining bridges. Her mentor, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), gives Carrie a chance to confirm her suspicions. Carrie isn’t the only one who suspects that something is wrong with Brody, as his wife, Jessica Brody (Morena Baccarin), struggles to recognize the man she knew beforehand. The unfolding story is riveting in seasons 1 and 2, before the show goes into different directions.
Homeland is streaming on Netflix.
‘Call My Agent!’ (2015 – 2020)
Call My Agent! is a French comedy series that occasionally uses established cinema performers playing themselves. That part may remind you of HBO’s Entourage, minus the bro-mance. The series follows Camille Valentini (Fanny Sidney), the newly hired assistant at a prestigious French talent agency.
When the founder of the agency suddenly passes away, Andréa Martel (Camille Cottin), Mathias Barneville (Thibault de Montalembert), Gabriel Sarda (Grégory Montel) and Arlette Azémar (Liliane Rovère) struggle to hold the business together while appeasing their actresses and actors. It’s also supposed to be a secret that Mathias is Camille’s father, but her presence in the agency as Andréa’s assistant is going to make that hard to keep under wraps.
Call My Agent! is streaming on Netflix.
‘The Big C’ (2010 – 2013)
Like Homeland, The Big C is another former Showtime series that may be primed for rediscovery on Netflix. This dramedy follows Laura Linney as Cathy Jamison, a middle-aged woman who discovers that she has terminal cancer. Since Cathy is already estranged from her husband, Paul (Oliver Platt), she considers moving on to a romance with Lenny (Idris Elba), a man she knows from work.
Cathy’s attempt to keep her condition a secret can only last so long, as both Paul and their son, Adam Jamison (Gabriel Basso), have to deal with knowing that she may not be in this world much longer. The Big C isn’t always about a death sentence for Cathy, but the show doesn’t hide where she’s going or how it will end. It’s the circumstances and the choices she makes along the way that provide meaning for her life and the conclusion of her journey.
