3 Underrated Netflix Movies I Can’t Wait to Watch This Weekend (November 28-30)

This holiday weekend, after the turkey is eaten and the Black Friday shopping is finished, you might be trying to decide on the perfect movie to watch.

Thankfully, Netflix has a fantastic library to choose from. And if you’re looking for something new, there’s plenty that you might not even be familiar with.

Watch With Us wants to recommend three movies to watch this weekend that are a little under the radar. Our picks are The KillerThe Room Next Door and the Robert De Niro buddy comedy Midnight Run.

Read about why these movies are worth watching below.

‘The Killer’ (2023)

Solitary, aloof and painstakingly methodical, a hitman known only as the Killer (Michael Fassbender) is known for carrying out hits with meticulous precision. When he’s assigned to kill a man at a Parisian hotel, the Killer accidentally shoots the dominatrix that the man enters his room with. Suddenly, the Killer’s carefully crafted house of cards begins tumbling down, as the Killer finds himself to be a target of his now-unhappy employers.

David Fincher’s return to the pulpy thriller genre that made him a world-class auteur is as cold and tightly coiled as its anti-hero protagonist. The Killer is a quietly entertaining and elegantly executed thrill ride, led by a magnetic lead performance from Fassbender. While the movie may be simpler and pared down than Fincher’s past works, The Killer is nevertheless thrillingly effective and totally absorbing in this very simplicity.

‘Midnight Run’ (1988)

Bail bondsman Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano) hires bounty hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro) to track down a mob accountant named Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin) in New York City and bring him to Los Angeles. Jack has been told that the job will be simple — a “midnight run” — but not only does he find out that the FBI wants their hands on Mardukas, so does the Chicago mob. Soon, Jack finds himself on a cross-country chase with Mardukas to get him to LA, but Mardukas’ personality may first drive Jack insane.

Grodin and De Niro make a fantastic odd-couple duo in this hilarious ’80s comic thriller, and their chemistry has been hailed by critics as a true marvel. Midnight Run is almost entirely carried on the backs of these two great comedic performances: Grodin the master of the sly deadpan, and De Niro playing with the archetype of his tough-guy movie persona. But what really makes Midnight Run sing is that it effectively becomes a platonic love story between Jack and Mardukas, and who doesn’t love a good bromance?

‘The Room Next Door’ (2024)

From acclaimed Spanish independent director Pedro Almodovar comes his first English-language film starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The Room Next Door follows Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), two women who once worked at the same magazine and became good friends. Many years later, after life put them on different paths, Ingrid learns that Martha has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and they reconnect at a Manhattan hospital. There, Martha explains what happened since the two went their separate ways — and her plans for the end of her life.

A heartfelt exploration of love, friendship and grief, Almodovar proves that his signature style of movie-making can transcend languages. The director’s trademark aesthetics of bright, vivid colors enliven a movie about death, further buoyed by the terrific performances from Moore and Swinton. Ultimately, The Room Next Door is warm and gentle but still a refreshingly complex story that is swathed in a distinct visual flair and confident direction.
