Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin Explain Why Something Borrowed Sequel Is Impossible
Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin don’t think a sequel to their 2011 romantic comedy Something Borrowed is possible, which might be bad news for fans.
Goodwin, 47, joined Kate, 46, and her brother, Oliver Hudson, on the Monday, November 24, episode of the pair’s “Sibling Revelry” podcast, which gave the former costars the opportunity to reflect on whether or not a sequel to the iconic rom-com could be possible.
“I was saying to Ollie that I get asked about [a sequel] on the [red] carpet all the time,” Kate told Goodwin. “I was on the carpet not that long ago, and they were like, ‘What’s the movie that you would want to do the sequel [to]? And I was like, ‘Well, Something Borrowed, we never got to do the sequel.”
The movie was inspired by Emily Griffin’s 2005 novel by the same name, which spawned a follow-up book called Something Blue. While a sequel was a possibility back in 2016 — Griffin even told PopSugar a script was in “great, great shape” at the time — Kate and Goodwin agreed that at this point, they’ve aged out of being able to reprise their respective original roles as Darcy and Rachel.
Goodwin confessed that if the opportunity to make Something Blue came to fruition today, she wouldn’t be open to it. “I would not want to go back and do Something Blue at this point,” she said, to which Kate replied, “I mean, we’re kind of too old.”
“Exactly, I remember … I had a monologue in Something Borrowed [about] spiraling about turning 30. And I’m like, I am gonna be 50 soon,” Goodwin added. “And what I would like is for her to write another book, where we are further on.”
Earlier in the conversation, Goodwin shared that her sons’ friends at school have all learned the pair’s iconic dance from the film. “I get stopped for this movie all the time,” she explained, “And you remember, they wanted to cut the dance scene and people ask me about the dance scene constantly.” (Goodwin shares Oliver, 10, and Hugo, 8, with husband Josh Dallas.)
She continued: “My sons, their girlfriends at school, they’ve been learning the dance. I’ve got a bunch of 12 year olds… I show up, I’m the assistant librarian when I’m not doing other things. And I have shown up on campus and had the girls be like, Mrs. Dallas, look.”
Though the movie’s premise was dramatic and pitted the two women against one another (Rachel sleeps with BFF Darcy’s fiancé, who she’s been pining for since their law school days) the cast got along very well behind the scenes.
“We got along immediately. We became friends, the moment we met. We’re both girl’s girls. Neither one of us is competitive with other actresses,” Goodwin told Collider in May 2011 of Hudson. “We have the same life priorities, so as different as we may be, we’re exactly the same in the most important ways, so we became fast friends. That part wasn’t difficult. We never had to work on representing the chemistry between us.”
