Gremlins 3 Gets 2027 Release, Steven Spielberg Will Return to Produce
A new installment in the Gremlins franchise is finally in the works, and Steven Spielberg will be involved.
Warner Bros. CEO and president David Zaslav revealed during a Thursday, November 6, investor call that Gremlins 3 has been greenlit, per multiple outlets. The film is set to release on November 19, 2027.
Spielberg, 78, will return as an executive producer on the movie. Chris Columbus, who wrote the first Gremlins, will direct and produce the third installment. Final Destination Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein will cowrite the screenplay.
“Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of development and production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement per Variety. “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven, Chris, and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
Gremlins 3’s plot, casting and additional details have yet to be revealed.
Gremlins premiered in 1984 and starred Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday and Frances Lee McCain. Howie Mandel lent his voice to the main gremlin himself, Gizmo. The black comedy follows Billy (Galligan) after he received a mogwai named Gizmo as a pet. There are three major rules when it comes to caring for the creature: keep him out of sunlight, don’t get him wet and don’t feed him after midnight.
After not carefully following the guidelines, Gizmo spawns more of his kind that evolve into monsters who wreak havoc on Billy’s hometown on Christmas Eve.
Gremlins was a box office success as it earned $212 million dollars worldwide.
A sequel dropped in 1990, with Galligan, Cates and Mandel reprised their roles. John Glover, Robert Prosky, Robert Picardo and Christopher Lee also joined the cast. Joe Dante directed, while Charles S. Haas wrote the script.
Gremlins 2 served as a continuation of Billy and Gizmo’s story as the creature got wet again and spawned more of his kind. This time, the monsters wreaked havoc in New York City.
The second film wasn’t as commercially successful as its predecessor, grossing $41.5 million, but received generally positive reviews.
As time has gone on, Gremlins 2 has become a cult classic along with the original film. Critically acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino praised the movie and defended it over the years.
“With Gremlins 2, [Dante] was able to do a MAD Magazine take-off on the first Gremlins for the entire movie,” Tarantino said during a December 2021 appearance on Eli Roth’s “History of Horror” podcast. “They actually start goofing on every aspect of Christopher Columbus’ original premise … and it was hysterical … it actually gets better every time you see it. It’s the first of those gag-like movies to 100 percent work from beginning to end since Airplane!”
Most recently, Gremlins was introduced to a younger generation with the children’s show Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The 2023 animated series serves as a prequel to the Gremlins movies, as it tells the story of Gizmo and his previous owner, Sam Wing, as they live in Shanghai in the 1920s. The Gremlins series has run for two seasons on HBO Max.
