Jessica Simpson Used to ‘Draw Abs’ for 6-Pack Look in Early 2000s
Jessica Simpson may have been delivering pop-star icon in the early 2000s, but she revealed that behind those famous abs was a little help from a makeup pencil.
The singer, 45, was serving up honesty, humor and a healthy dose of self-love during a recent appearance on the Today show, all before most fans had finished their first cup of coffee.
Simpson spilled the tea about her taut waistline while answering eight questions before 8 a.m. in a light-hearted clip shared via Instagram on Tuesday, October 14, admitting that she “drew abs” on her stomach to achieve a six-pack look because she “didn’t have any.”
When asked what three outfits from her closet were the most iconic Y2K looks, she referenced that sultry outfit she wore in her “Irresistible” music video.
The chart-topping performer said that she embraced the style trends at the time, so they cut the top of her jeans off and frayed the fabric to show as much midsection as possible.
Simpson also said “anything” Juicy Couture was a go-to for her during that era of her career, adding that she would “dress it up” or “dress it down” with Pucci or Gucci heels.
Her mom, Tina Ann Drew, offered up a suggestion for the No. 3 most iconic look of her past, mentioning the plunging white Armani suit she wore at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Simpson said it was her first event she attended while not wearing a bra, quipping that she was only 22 when she made the fashion statement.
As for her Daisy Duke shorts from her role in the 2005 movie The Dukes Of Hazzard, she confirmed they are still in her storage unit — she’s just not exactly sure where.
During the Q&A, Simpson shared her favorite music videos, revealing that “Angels,” “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” and “Public Affair” will always hold a special place in her heart.
Simpson also dished if she had any reality TV shows she likes to binge, revealing she has not watched the Real Housewives, The Traitors or Love Island, but does enjoy America’s Got Talent.
When it comes to how she feels as an independent music artist, Simpson said she is enjoying her newfound freedom. “The only boundaries I set are the ones I give myself,” she added.
It’s been a transformative year for the songstress after Us Weekly confirmed Simpson and estranged husband Eric Johnson called it quits in November 2024, two months before she issued a statement regarding their split.
“Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them,” she shared via Instagram in January. “We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.” (The exes share three kids: Maxwell, 13, Ace, 12, and Birdie, 6).
Six months after announcing her separation, Simpson “has a new sense of confidence and is coming back into her own,” a source exclusively told Us in August.
“She’s doing well since the split,” the insider added. “She’s a different person since she’s been out of the relationship.”
