Street Style Look of the Week: Shades of Gray

In their dark sunglasses and long overcoats, David Jouan and Emmanuelle Sauvonnet almost slipped by me undetected as they strolled through Paris on a sunny Saturday in early February. Thankfully, they were walking a small dog that helped catch my attention.

Mr. Jouan, 45, and Ms. Sauvonnet, 58, live in Pontarlier, a French town near the country’s border with Switzerland, where they have a clothing store called Nouvelle Vague (“new wave” in English). They had come to Paris that weekend to visit family.

Both said they took fashion cues from music, movies and other elements of popular culture. And Mr. Jouan noted that the complementary gray palettes of their outfits that day were not a coincidence.

“We’re trying as much as possible to coordinate outfits as we’re often together,” he said, adding that they “wear what we like, what we believe in and what inspires us.” Bruno, their dog, was sadly less convivial: After I approached, he hid behind Ms. Sauvonnet for most of our conversation.
