Jamie Foxx Was ‘In a Stone Cold Coma,’ Netflix Special Reveals
Jamie Foxx is pulling back the curtain on his 2023 health scare in his upcoming Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.
After attending an October taping for the special, two of Foxx’s fans revealed to CNN what the actor, 56, talked about — including his brush with death and hospitalization.
Foxx reportedly told the audience that in 2023 “he passed out and remembered waking up. He said it was a near-death experience,” fan Demecos Chambers told CNN after seeing the stand-up show live.
“He spoke about waking up in the hospital,” Chambers continued. “He thought he just passed out for a second, but it was two or three weeks. He was in a stone-cold coma.”
While Netflix declined to comment on what made it into the final cut, Chambers told the outlet that Foxx went into great detail about his health scare.
Foxx allegedly told his fans, “If he didn’t get to the hospital in that moment and the nurse didn’t treat him in a certain timeframe, he said he would have died,” per Chambers, who noted that Foxx claimed he was “literally within an inch of his life. He was gone. It was lights out.”
Foxx explained to the audience that his family was the key to him waking up. “His daughter was playing a family guitar and that is what woke him up and kept him alive during his coma,” Chambers claimed Foxx said. “He really worships his daughters. They play a significant part of the show. He says this situation gave him a grander perspective on life and the people around him.”
In April 2023, Jamie’s daughter Corinne Foxx announced that he was hospitalized due to a “medical complication” while filming Back in Action in Atlanta. Corrine, 30, revealed at the time that “due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery.” (Jamie shares Corinne with ex Connie Kline. He also shares daughter Anelise, 15, with ex Kristin Grannis.)
Details about Jamie’s medical emergency remained unknown during his month-long hospital stay. Since being released, the actor hasn’t shared much about what transpired but he did assure fans in August 2023 that he was on the mend.
“It’s been an unexpected dark journey, but I can see the light,” he wrote via Instagram at the time. “I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers.”
Jamie returned to set in January for his and Cameron Diaz’s Netflix action-comedy and in September, he was able to walk Corinne down the aisle as she wed Joe Hooten.
The following month, he took the stand-up stage for the first time since leaving the hospital. At the time, Jamie said his “heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy” after filming the Netflix special, which he teased will give him “an opportunity to tell my side of the story.”
Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was is billed as a comedy special celebrating Jamie’s “resilience, humor and the power community.”
Jamie will reportedly describe his journey back to life and poke fun at the crazy theories that were floating around when he was in the hospital — including a cloning hoax.
“Jamie is an amazing storyteller. He can tell a story where you feel like you’re sitting with your uncles. It was hilarious,” Chambers told CNN.
Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was premieres on Netflix Tuesday, December 10.
