2025 TV Spinoffs to Look Forward: 9-1-1, Big Bang Theory and More

2025 is a big year for TV spinoffs with shows such as The Handmaid’s Tale, 9-1-1, The Big Bang Theory and more growing their onscreen universes.

ABC caught Us‘ interest with their promise of a second 9-1-1 spinoff. The original show has focused on Los Angeles first responders with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Guzman, Kenneth Choi and Aisha Hinds, making up the main cast since it premiered — originally on Fox — in 2018.

9-1-1: Lone Star was the first attempt for the show to branch out by following a New York firefighter (played by Rob Lowe) who relocated to Texas while trying to balance his job with issues in his own life. Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra McClain, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, Julian Works and Gina Torres rounded out the show.

By 2023, 9-1-1: Lone Star was renewed for its fifth and final season after remaining on Fox. Cocreators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, meanwhile, shifted their focus to a new location that would introduce another spinoff.

Ollie Upton/HBO; Liam Daniel/Netflix Has anyone else noticed how TV shows have pivoted from spinoffs to prequels? Usually when a show was popular, it would expand with a series based in the same time period. Now, networks and streaming services have instead decided to turn back time with prequels of your favorite programs. Bridgerton is […]

“Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall,” Murphy told Variety in October 2024. “Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it.”

He continued: “So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Meanwhile over at CBS, Fire Country is expanding with a series about Morena Baccarin‘s character Mickey. Sheriff Country will center around Mickey as she investigates criminal activity and patrols the streets of her small town while contending with her ex-con father and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter.

“I’m really excited about it. I can tell you that personally that I’m really proud of what we’ve done so far,” Fire Country series lead and creator Max Thieriot exclusively told Us Weekly about the upcoming CBS show in October 2024. “I’m only getting bits and pieces of where [the writers’ room] is at right now in the season 1 conversation. But I can tell you that what I’ve seen and what I know and have been a part of is very exciting.”

Thieriot, who is an executive producer on Sheriff Country, said the show is really coming together, adding, “[The writers’ room] excitement level has been very high. So I know when they’re feeling really good about everything and they’re really excited about some stuff that the room is working on, it’s going to be good. It’s going to be a really fun yin to our yang in a weird way.”

He concluded: “We get to see a different part of Edgewater and get to meet different characters who live in this town and this community that we wouldn’t normally meet. Just getting to see a different side of the town is going to be really fun. It’s going to give us a more complete understanding of this community and this town and these people. I just think it’s going to make the world feel more whole in a weird way.”

‘The Testaments’ (Hulu)

Based on Margaret Atwood‘s follow-up book, Hulu’s The Testaments takes place 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. Narrated by Ann Dowd‘s character, three women recount what happened to Gilead after June (Elisabeth Moss) was taken and Aunt Lydia (Dowd) was revealed to be a mole for Mayday. The trio must secretly gather and smuggle incriminating information about Gilead’s regime out of the country to bring the repressive society down.

The plan is to have The Testaments premiere after The Handmaid’s Tale‘s final season concludes in 2025.

‘The Madison’ (Paramount Network)

Before Yellowstone came to an end in December 2024, ViacomCBS president Chris McCarthy confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that a spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey was in the works. One year later, however, the McConaughey spinoff appeared to be dead and replaced by a different spinoff titled The Madison.

Michelle Pfeiffer stars in the upcoming series alongside Patrick J. Adams, Kurt Russell and Beau Garrett. The Madison is the first spinoff in the Yellowstone franchise set in the present day.

Untitled ‘9-1-1’ Spinoff (ABC)

9-1-1, which initially premiered on Fox in 2018 before transitioning to ABC, introduced viewers to the professional and personal lives of Los Angeles first responders. The series is currently in development so it remains unclear which location the new iteration would take place. It has been reported that ABC is looking to debut the second 9-1-1 spinoff — after Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star — during the 2025-26 TV season, more specifically in fall 2025.

‘Sheriff Country’ (CBS)

Fire Country, which premiered in 2022, followed inmate Bode (Thieriot) as he got a chance to shorten his prison sentence by volunteering for the California Conservation Camp Program in his hometown of Edgewater. Season 2 expanded that world in a backdoor pilot which focused on the law enforcement officials.

Sheriff Country is centered around Sharon’s (Diane Farr) estranged sister Mickey (Baccarin) as she solves crimes in Edgewater. CBS greenlit the spinoff in May 2024 but the series isn’t expected to premiere until the 2025-2026 season.

Untitled ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff (Max)

The Big Bang Theory aired from 2007 to 2019 and introduced Us to Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch as a group of friends made up of scientists and their significant others. After the hit sitcom came to an end, CBS introduced a prequel centered around Parson’s character Sheldon titled Young Sheldon, which subsequently paved the way for a show about Sheldon’s older brother a.k.a Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

An untitled spinoff is currently in the works at Max with Brian Posehn, Lauren Lapkus and Kevin Sussman being tapped to headline the show after playing side characters on later seasons of The Big Bang Theory. No release date has been announced as production continues on the follow-up.

‘It: Welcome To Derry’ (Max)

The Welcome to Derry series tells the origin story of author Stephen King‘s iconic killer clown Pennywise. Bill Skarsgård, who is also an executive producer on the project, will be reprising the role of Pennywise after he originally brought the iconic character to life in the most recent reboot of the film franchise.

Untitled ‘Stranger Things’ Spinoff (Netflix)

When creators Ross and Matt Duffer announced the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, they hinted that the franchise isn’t technically coming to an end. No plot information has been released yet but the series would presumably exist in the same universe since Stranger Things previously teased more stories about Hawkins Lab test subjects in season 2.

Untitled ‘Reacher’ Spinoff (Prime Video)

Based on the Jack Reacher book series by Lee Child, Reacher introduced Alan Ritchson as a self-proclaimed “hobo” and former U.S. Army military policeman who uses his intelligence and abilities to face off with dangerous criminals.

The Reacher universe is expected to expand with a spinoff about Maria Sten‘s character Frances Neagley.

‘Vision Quest’ (Disney+)

WandaVision‘s success initially led to the Agatha All Along spinoff before Paul Bettany signed on for a series centered around Vision. The upcoming series, which starts filming in 2025, is intended to conclude a trilogy about Elizabeth Olsen‘s character Wanda and Bettany’s Vision.
