I’m not going to sugarcoat it: It can be downright tear-inducing to get dressed after having a baby. Just as you got comfortable with your maternity clothing, you now have to dress for a not-quite-pregnant, not-quite-back-to-where-you-were belly. As a toddler mom who’s familiar with this stage, I’m here to help fellow moms feel good in their skin — and that may include concealing a postpartum belly.
For the record, I’m not saying you need to conceal anything. I’m just saying that as a mom, I understand the desire to feel as comfortable as possible as your body goes through yet another change. So, I’ve gathered up some of my favorite sets, tops, bottoms and dresses — because, yes, you may need fancy wear in the early postpartum months — that you’ll feel confident in with a postpartum belly.
16 Go-To Pieces for Concealing a Postpartum Belly
No-Brainer Sets
1. Our Favorite: You’ll be living in this waffle-stitch set from Free People, which includes a long-sleeve top and pull-on pants that you’ll be happy to wear inside and outside the house.
2. Simple Comfort: Available in 13 colors, this lounge set features shorts with a drawstring, so you’ll always have the right fit as your postpartum belly changes.
3. Oversized Ensemble: Yes, this short-sleeve top and pants set is loose for postpartum comfort, but it can be easily elevated with a front tuck to add a bit more style when you’re running errands.
4. Warm Weather Winner: Whether you’re dressing for the warmer months or you tend to overheat, you’ll appreciate this waffle-knit shorts set that has an oversized — but not too oversized — fit.
Loose-Fitting Tops
5. Our Favorite: There’s something to be said about a soft cotton T-shirt that can be thrown on and accessorized, and that’s exactly what this oversized boyfriend tee and shorts set offers.
6. Reliable Sweater: Sometimes an oversized cardigan is just what the doctor ordered, as you can throw it over a top and leggings for the ultimate rich mom look.
7. Nursing Companion: If you’re breastfeeding your newborn, this cashmere sweater was designed to be as practical as it is stylish thanks to the tie front.
8. Date Night Must-Have: You should feel beautiful on your first date night as parents, and this faux wrap top drapes in all the right places. Choose from three bold colors.
Relaxed Bottoms
9. Our Favorite: Good luck choosing between the 13 colors, because you’ll fall in love with these fleece joggers that feature an elastic waist and a soft interior.
10. Everyday Shorts: These linen shorts will be your go-to for, well, every day, as they have ruche detailing to conceal what you’re trying to hide.
11. Casual Upgrade: When you’re over wearing sweatpants, take a break with this flowy midi skirt that still provides a forgiving drawstring.
12. Dress-Up Pants: No one will ever know that these wide-leg satin pants have a drawstring waist because they can be dressed up for a night out in comfort (and style).
Drapey Dresses
13. Our Favorite: Made of 100% cotton, this Steve Madden midi dress cinches right under the bust, providing a flowy silhouette around the belly.
14. Airy Maxi: This long dress can be as casual or dressed up as you want it to be, thanks to its V-neck design and flowy sleeves.
15. Short and Sweet: With a collar to give it an elevated feel, this short-sleeve dress is easy to throw on when you don’t know what to wear (and the buttons are convenient for breastfeeding).
16. Fancy Frills: This drop-waist dress elongates your torso, making it a flattering option when you have a bridal shower or other celebration on the calendar soon after having a baby.
